Salisbury steak is a seasoned ground beef patty cooked like a steak and served with a flavorful brown gravy. Bobby Flay’s version adds depth with sautéed onions, mushrooms, Worcestershire sauce, and fresh herbs, creating a dish that feels like home-cooked comfort with restaurant-quality flavor.
1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil (for searing)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon chopped parsley (for garnish)
Make the beef mixture – In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
Shape into patties – Form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties, about ¾-inch thick.
Sear the patties – Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 3–4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove and set aside.
Sauté onions and mushrooms – In the same pan, melt butter and add sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook until softened and lightly browned.
Make the gravy – Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Simmer until thickened.
Combine and simmer – Return patties to the pan, spoon gravy over them, and cook for 10–12 minutes on low heat until fully cooked and tender.
Serve hot – Garnish with chopped parsley and serve with mashed potatoes or rice.
