Bobby Flay’s marinara sauce is a classic Italian-style tomato sauce made with crushed tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, onions, and herbs like basil and oregano. It’s simmered gently to create a flavorful, smooth, and versatile sauce perfect for pasta dishes, pizza bases, or as a dipping sauce.

Ingredients

  • Olive oil – 2 tablespoons

  • Yellow onion (finely chopped) – 1 small

  • Garlic (minced) – 4 cloves

  • Crushed tomatoes (preferably San Marzano) – 1 can (28 oz)

  • Tomato paste – 1 tablespoon

  • Sugar – ½ teaspoon (optional, for balancing acidity)

  • Dried oregano – ½ teaspoon

  • Salt and pepper – to taste

  • Fresh basil (chopped) – 2 tablespoons

  • Crushed red pepper flakes (optional) – ¼ teaspoon for heat

Instructions

  • Heat the olive oil – Warm in a saucepan over medium heat.

  • Sauté onions and garlic – Cook onions until translucent, then add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

  • Add tomatoes and paste – Stir in crushed tomatoes and tomato paste until well combined.

  • Season the sauce – Add oregano, salt, pepper, sugar (if using), and red pepper flakes.

  • Simmer gently – Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  • Finish with basil – Stir in chopped basil just before removing from heat.

  • Taste and adjust – Add more seasoning if needed before serving.
